Abstract
Access to sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS) for women and girls with disabilities (WGWD) has been receiving global attention. WGWD possess similar sexual needs as their counterparts without disabilities. WGWD encounter compounded stereotypes and systemic barriers to accessing SRHS. There is no specific legislation addressing access to SRHS in Nigeria. Moreover, for international instruments containing such provisions, domestication within Nigeria’s legal framework remains a challenge. Furthermore, there is the problem of implementation of existing provisions. The authors examine the right of access of WGWD to SRHS in Nigeria and the various SRHS available to WGWD, exploring the barriers they face in accessing quality services and the legal framework available for their protection and SRHS in Nigeria. The authors conclude that access to SRHS for WGWD in Nigeria remains limited. Despite being a substantial portion of the population, they encounter barriers to accessing adequate SRHS. The authors recommend that efforts to address the disparities in access to SRHS for WGWD require collaborative action from all stakeholders, enactment and enforcement of legislation tailored to the particular needs of WGWD and structural changes, such as communication and ensuring compliance with accessibility standards.
